چکیده

NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is a radio galaxy with prototypical double lobes, where the magnetic field intensity is accurately measured via the inverse-Compton technique. The radio-emitting electrons in the lobes are inferred to have a synchrotron life time of ∼ 0.1 Gyr. Considering the lobe energetics, we estimate the past nuclear X-ray luminosity of NGC 1316 to be at least ∼ 4 × 10 W (4 × 10 erg s). Thus, the nucleus was rather active at least 0.1 Gyr ago. In contrast, we confirmed with ASCA and ROSAT that the nucleus of NGC 1316 is very faint in X-rays at present, with the 2–10 keV luminosity of any AGN-like hard component being < 2 × 10 W (2 × 10 erg s) even assuming a nuclear obscuration up to ∼ 10 m (10 cm). This is at least an order of magnitude lower than the estimated past activity, indicating that the nucleus is presently very inactive. From these two results, we conclude that the nucleus of NGC 1316 has become dormant during the last 0.1 Gyr. This suggests the possible abundance of “dormant” quasars in nearby galaxies. Atomic and molecular gas in the merger galaxy NGC 1316 ( Fornax A ) and its environment

We present and interpret observations of atomic and molecular gas toward the southern elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A), a strong double-lobe radio source with a disturbed optical morphology that includes numerous shells and loops. The CO(1–0), CO(2–1), and Hi observations were made with SEST and the VLA. CO emission corresponding to a total molecular hydrogen mass of ∼5×10 M⊙ was detected ...

Calibrating Type Ia Supernovae Using the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function I. Initial Results

We report the results of an [O III] 5007 survey for planetary nebulae (PN) in five galaxies that were hosts of well-observed Type Ia supernovae: NGC 524, NGC 1316, NGC 1380, NGC 1448 and NGC 4526. The goals of this survey are to better quantify the zero-point of the maximum magnitude versus decline rate relation for supernovae Type Ia and to validate the insensitivity of Type Ia luminosity to p...

Chandra X - ray Observations of NGC 1316 ( Fornax A )

2 Abstract We report the results of the Chandra ACIS sub-arcsecond resolution X-ray observation of the archetypal merger radio galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A). We confirm the presence of fine sub-structures in the hot Interstellar Medium (ISM). Some of these are likely to result from interaction with the radio jets, while others may be related to a complex intermingling of different phases of the IS...

The stellar dynamics and mass of NGC 1316 using the radial velocities of Planetary Nebulae

We present a study of the kinematics of the outer regions of the early-type galaxy NGC 1316, based on radial velocity measurements of 43 planetary nebulae as well as deep integrated-light absorption line spectra. The smoothed velocity field of NGC 1316 indicates fast rotation at a distance of 16 kpc, possibly associated with an elongated feature orthogonal to the inner dust lanes. The mean squa...

v 1 1 0 N ov 1 99 7 ROSAT X - RAY OBSERVATIONS OF THE RADIO GALAXY NGC

We have observed NGC 1316 (Fornax A) with the ROSAT HRI. In this paper, we present the results of these observations and we complement them with the spectral analysis of the archival PSPC data. The spectral properties suggest the presence of a significant component of thermal X-ray emission (> 60%), amounting to ∼ 10 9 M ⊙ of hot ISM. Within 3 ′ from the nucleus of NGC 1316, the HRI X-ray surfa...
